The Prophetic Church Of Pergamos
by Pastor/Evangelist Len Hutsell
This article has been viewed 1508 times.

In the two previous editions of "End-Times Trumpet" I have written about the prophetic significance of the first two of the "Seven Churches Of Rev. 2 & 3", which, because they are contained in a "Book Of Prophecy" (Rev. 1:3 / Rev. 22:19) are, therefore, "prophetic" in nature, and the way in which they are "prophetic" in nature is that they prophetically depict "Seven Stages Of Church History" (actually written before the events that they prophetically portrayed occurred).

As we have seen in the "Letter To Ephesus", that "letter" was prophetic of the 1st Century AD Apostolic Church in that Rev. 2:2 (which concerned the "Church Of Ephesus") said: "You have tried them that say they are Apostles, and are not and have found them to be liars." Since this letter was the only one that mentioned the "Apostles" this shows that the "Letter To The Church Of Ephesus" was prophetic of the early "Apostolic Era" of Church History.

As we saw in last month's "End-Times Trumpet", the 2nd of the "Seven Letters" — the "Letter To The Church Of Smyrna" concerned the late-Apostolic Era & post-Apostolic Era of Church History, in that in the "Letter To The Church Of Smyrna" the Lord said — in Rev. 2:10 — "You will have Tribulation ten days". Those "10 days" were prophetic of "10 Periods Of Persecution" that the late Apostolic Church and the post-Apostolic Church were to experience under the reign of 10 Roman Emperors beginning with Emperor Nero - the 5th Emperor of the Roman Empire — and ending with the reign of Emperor Diocletian — the 51st Emperor of the Roman Empire — followed by the "Edict Of Milan" issued by Emperor Constantine (the 57th Emperor of the Roman Empire) & his co-Emperor Licinius (the 59th Emperor of the Roman Empire & the brother-in-law to Emperor Constantine) which read: "I, Constantine the August and I, Licinius the August, desirous of promoting in every way the public peace and prosperity, have deemed it one of our first duties to relegate the worship of Deity. We do, therefore, grant to Christians and all others the liberty to embrace the Christian faith, or any other religion which to him may seem best."

After this "Edict Of Milan" was issued by Emperors Constantine & Licinius, this set the stage for the rise of the "The Christian State Religion Of Rome" which ultimately became the Roman Catholic Church, and thus as we study the prophetic "Letter To Pergamos" we will see that that prophetic letter was prophetic of the "Pre-Catholic Era of Church History".

Rev. 2:12 - "And to the Angel" (Pastor) "of the Church in Pergamos write..."

The name "Pergamos" (also called "Pergamon") is a combination of two Greek words: "perga" which means "tower" and "gamos" which means "marriage" and thus the name "Pergamos" denotes a "marriage" (of paganism) "with Christianity", which "paganism" began at the ancient "Tower" of Babel.

The Tower of Babel
Fig. 1. "The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1563)" (Photo and Caption Credit: www.wikipedia.org)
The construction of the Tower of Babel was the beginning of the ancient Kingdom of Babylon and the Kingdom of Assyria, and the Tower of Babel was constructed at the instigation of a man named "Nimrod" as Gen. 10:8-10 says: "And Cush begat Nimrod, he began to be a mighty one in the Earth...and the beginning of his Kingdom was Babel in the land of Shinar."

The Biblical description of the construction of the "Tower of Babel" is found in Gen. 11:1-4 — "And the whole Earth was of one language and one speech.
"And it came to pass as they journeyed from the East" (after the Great Flood of Noah) "that they found a Plain in the land of Shinar and they dwelt there.
"And they said to one another: 'Go to, let us make brick and burn them thoroughly', and they had brick for stone and slime"
(which, interestingly is made from Oil and it is in that area of the World where there is massive amounts of Oil!) "had they for mortar.
"And they said: 'Go to, let us build us a city and Tower whose top may reach unto heaven" (the sky) "and let us make us a name lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole Earth." — Note: this was in defiance of God who had commanded the descendents of Noah, after the "Great Flood", to "scatter abroad and repopulate and fill up the whole Earth." — Gen. 9:1.

Nimrod sculpture
Fig. 2. "'Nimrod' by Yitzhak Danziger" (Photo and Caption Credit: en.wikipedia.org)
According to the Jewish historian, Josephus, in his book "Antiquities Of The Jews " — Book I — Chapter IV— Vrs. 2 & 3: "Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham the son of Noah — a bold man and of great strength of hand — he persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it was through His means that they were happy, but to believe it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence upon his own power. He also said that he would be revenged upon God if He should have a mind to drown the World again, for that he would build a Tower to high for the waters to be able to reach, and that he would avenge himself on God for drowning their forefathers.

"Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination ofNimrod and to esteem it apiece of cowardice to submit to God, and they built a Tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about this work, and by reason of the hands employed in it, it grew very high sooner then anyone could expect, but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built that thereby it's great height seemed, upon the view, to be less then it really was. It was built of burnt brick cemented together with mortar made of bitumen" (an Oil/Tar substance) "that it might not be able to admit water."

"Nimrod" was also known to the Assyrians by the name of "Ninus" who was considered to be the first King of the Assyrian Empire. In the ancient Assyrian & Babylonian Kingdom, Nimrod/King Ninus was worshipped as a "god" (which shows that he was also a type of the Antichrist).

Ninus
Fig. 3. "Ninus from Guillaume Rouillé's Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum" (Photo and Caption Credit: www.wikipedia.org)
King Ninus (Nimrod) also had a wife whose name was Semiramis, who succeeded King Ninus (Nimrod) in ruling over those who were building the "Tower Of Babel" and the Assyrian/Babylonian Empire of King Ninus.

Semiramis
Fig. 4. "Semiramis depicted as an armed Amazon in this eighteenth-century Italian illustration." (Photo and Caption Credit: en.wikipedia.org)
According to "Wikipedia": "Nearly every stupendous work of antiquity in the area of the Euphrates" (Iraq) "or in Iran" (Assyria) "seems to have been ascribed to her." The historian Herodotus ascribes to her the artificial banks that confined the Euphrates River. According to "Wikipedia" "Various places in Assyria and throughout Mesopotamia, as a whole... bore the name of Semiramis."

Tammuz
Fig. 5. "Tammuz, statue by Imre Schrammel, National Theatre of Miskolc, Hungary." (Photo and Caption Credit: www.wikipedia.org)
After the death of King Minus (Nimrod) Queen Semiramis gave birth to a son who she named "Tammuz" who she claimed was King Ninus (Nimrod) reincarnated and whose name is still retained by the Israeli's as one of the names of one of the months of the Israeli calendar year.

Ishtar
Fig. 6. Left: "Ishtar holding her symbol, Louvre Museum"; Right: "Old Babylonian period Queen of Night relief, often considered to represent an aspect of Ishtar." (Photo and Caption Credit: en.wikipedia.org)
Tammuz had a "sexy lady" by the name of Ishtar, who he gave the title of "Queen Of Heaven" to because his father — Nimrod - who he was supposedly the reincarnation of, had been building a "Tower whose top may reach unto Heaven".

The title of "Queen Of Heaven" -which was the title given to Ishtar by Tammuz — set the stage for Mary the earthly mother of Jesus Christ to be later given the title "Queen Of Heaven" by the Roman Catholic Church.

When Tammuz was 40 years old he was out on a hunting expedition trying to imitate his father Nimrod (who he was supposedly the reincarnation of) in that Gen. 10:9 says of Nimrod: "he was a mighty hunter before the Lord." Tammuz, however, was not the "mighty hunter" that Nimrod was because he was attacked and killed by a wild boar, at the age of 40, so Ishtar — his concubine/lover — set up a 40-day (1 day for each of the 40 years of his life) Fast followed by a large grandiose Feast in honor of Tammuz known as the "Feast Of Ishtar", which 40-day fast is the origin of the 40 day "Lent Season" in Catholicism preceding "Easter", which name "Easter" originates from the name "Ishtar", as Ishtar claims that Tammuz appeared to her and told her that he would raise from the dead (an imitation of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter).

The Old Testament Nation of Israel picked up the "40-Day Mourning/Fast" for Tammuz (which is probably why they still have one of their calendar months named the "Month of Tamuz") which God condemned in Ezek. 8:14 — "Then He brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord's House" (the Temple) "which was toward the North, and behold there sat women weeping for Tammuz."

The Old Testament Nation of Israel also picked up the worship of Ishtar as the "Queen Of Heaven" which God also condemned:

Jer. 7:18 — "The children gather wood and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to other gods that they may provoke Me to anger."

Sol Invictus

(Photo and Caption Credit: www.wikipedia.org)
After the death of Nimrod, his Queen — Semiramis — claimed that he ascended into Heaven to become the "Sun god", and that he was to be worshipped as such, which worship was later transferred to and picked up by the Romans of the Roman Empire in the worship of "Sol Invictus" — the "Sun god" (in the pre-Christian days of the Roman Empire), and interestingly when Constantine became the Emperor of the Roman Empire allowing Christians the freedom of worship he also embraced the worship of the "Sun god".

The "Babylonian Cult" (pagen religion) which worshipped Nimrod as the "Sun god" and who mourned the death of Tammuz with a "40-day Fast" followed by The "Feast of Ishtar", and who worshipped Ishtar as the "Queen Of Heaven", moved out of Babylon in 487 BC when Xerxes, the King of Persia (now called "Iran") invaded and captured the city and Kingdom of Babylon (now called "Iraq") and later, in 478 BC pillaged the "Temple Of Belus" (the name "Belus" comes from the word "Babel" which means "confusion of tongues" as when God destroyed the Tower of Babel, as is recorded in Gen. 11:6-9 He "confused their languages") forcing the Babylonian Priests to flee to keep from being killed. When the Priests of the Babylonian Kingdom fled from Babylon (which grew up as a Kingdom after the destruction of the "Tower Of Babel") they fled to the city of Pergamos in 478 BC and made Pergamos their new "religious headquarters", which is why the name "Pergamos" means "marriage of (paganism) "from a Tower".

Among the pagan practices which the Priests of Bel ("Bel is confounded" — Jer. 50:2) brought with them to Pergamos from Babylon was the practice of confession of sins to a Priest and the sprinkling of "holy water", which practices have now been adopted by Roman Catholicism.

In the later "Babylonian Empire" (founded by King Nebuchadnezzer of the Book of Daniel) King Nebuchadnezzer built beautiful gates of entrance into Babylon through the massive walls that surrounded the city of Babylon, which gates were built in honor of Ishtar the "Queen Of Heaven" called "The Ishtar Gate".

A reproduction of the "Ishtar Gate" was also built in the city of Pergamos, thus connecting Pergamos with Babylon:

Rev. 2:12 (continued) — "...these things says He who has the sharp sword with two edges." — this statement is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ as the "two-edged sword" is the "Word of God" (Eph. 6:17) and Jesus Christ is the Living "Word of God" (Jn. 1:1,14) and Rev. 1:16 says: "Out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword."

Rev. 2:13 — "I know your works and where you dwell, even where Satan's seat" (throne) "is..." — Because the believers in the city of Pergamos were dwelling in the city which had become the 2nd headquartes of the Babylonian Cult they were, in essence, "dwelling where Satan's seat was".

Zeus

Pergamos called "The Great Altar Of Pergamon" which was dedicated to the Greek "god" Zeus, who was called by the Romans "Jupiter", who the Roman "god" Sol Invictus" also seemed to be a depiction of.

Another "god" that was worshipped in Pergamos was the "god" Asclepius who was the "god" of medical healing. Asclepius was symbolized as an older man holding a staff with a Serpent entwined upon it. The origin for this "god", no doubt, came from Num. 21:8-9 where God told Moses to make a "fiery serpent" and to put it on a pole and to "raise it up in the Camp of Israel" for all the Israelites to look upon it to be healed from deadly serpent bites that they had received in the wilderness for complaining against God and Moses.

The modern symbol of Medical Healing is that of a Serpent entwined upon a pole, which Originates from the "Medical god" Asclepius.

Another of the great Temples of Pergamos was the "Serapis Temple" built in honor of the Egyptian "goddess" Isis and/or Serapis.

After the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great and the Hellenization of the Egyptian culture initiated by Pharoah Ptolemy I, the "goddess" Isis became known as the "Queen Of Heaven", which, again was setting the stage for Mary the mother of Jesus to be given the title "Queen Of Heaven" by the Roman Catholic Church when Christianity (Roman Catholic version) became the "State Religion Of Rome" under Emperor Constantine.

Many ancient pictures and statues of the "goddess" Isis pictures Isis nursing an infant baby called "Horus" which is the origin of artist pictures of Mary nursing the Infant Baby Jesus, as depicted by the Catholic Church (according to "Wikipedia").

It was at the "Serapis Temple", where the "goddess" Isis was worshipped that, in the year 92 AD "Saint Antipas" the first Bishop of Pergamum became a martyr victim of an early clash between Serapis worshippers and Christians, which is what is referred to in "The Letter To The Church Of Pergamos", in Rev. 2:13 — "...you hold fast to My Name and have not denied My faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth."

The Roman Emperor Trajan was also worshipped in Pergamos at the Temple of Trajan. The modern name of the ancient city of Pergamos is "Bergama, Turkey".

Rev. 2:14- "But I have a few things against you because you have them there that hold the Doctrine of Balaam who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the Children of Israel and to eat things sacrificed to Idols and to commit fornication."

This is a reference to Num. 31:15-16

where the Prophet-for-hire could not prophesy "doom" on the Israeli's as he was hired by King Balak of Moab to do, he advised King Balak to have his people intermarry with the Israelis and thereby "pollute" the worship of the one True God by teaching the Israelis to worship images and idols and to commit fornication. And since the city of Pergamos was the center of Emperor Trajan worship, and the center of the worship of Zeus, and was the center of the worship of Asclepius, and was also the center of the worship of Ishtar/Isis as the "Queen Of Heaven", many of the
Bergama

Christians were teaching other Christians that since they lived in the midst of all that pagan idolatry that they also had to give honor to those pagen "gods" and that God would understand, which is what God here referred to as the "Balaam Teaching". And the "fornication" that God here referred to was "spiritual fornication" which is the worship of other "gods" in that the Church, as the "Bride of Christ" is to worship the Lord God & Jesus Christ only, and to worship other "gods" is to commit "spiritual fornication". Also the worship of the "Queen Of Heaven" — Ishtar and/or Isis — also included the practice of literal sexual fornication.

Rev. 2:15 — "So hast thou also those who hold the Doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate."

As I explained in the "Prophetic Letter To The Church Of Ephesus", the "Doctrine of the Nicolaitanes" was started by one of the 7 first "Deacons" of the early church, whose name was Nicholas. Nicholas taught that since it is the "soul"/"spirit" of man that "gets saved" and not the "body", that what the "body" does, does not affect the eternal destiny of the "soul"/"spirit". Therefore those who "practiced the deeds of the Nicolaitanes" could, as they believed, worship the Idols of Pergamos and engage in sexual fornication without the eternal destiny of their "spirit'V'soul" being affected, but God does not agree with that and He said that He "hated" that teaching.

Rev. 2:16 — "Repent or else I will come unto you quickly and will fight against you with the sword of My mouth."

As we have seen in this study, many of the practices of ancient Babylon which were brought to Pergamos when the Priests of Belus relocated from Babylon to Pergamos were practices that are now found in the Roman Catholic version of Christianity, which shows that the "Pergamos Era of Church History" was the "pre-Catholic Era" of Church History. We also note that God is not pleased with the pagan rituals of the Babylonian Cult that are now part of the Roman Catholic religion, including the worship of and praying to Images & Idols and the "Queen Of Heaven", such as were represented by the Idolatry of the city of Pergamos.

We note also that unless Christian believers repent of Idolatry and fornication that the Lord will "fight against them" with "the sword of His mouth", which is the Word of God, by which He will judge them at the final Day of Judgment.

Rev. 2:17 — "He that has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches: to him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows except he who receives it."

In these verses we find the next promises to the "Overcomers" of the Church Age.

The 1st promise to the "Overcomers" given here is that they will be given "to eat of the hidden manna". This is the victor's "secret food" who is Jesus Christ the "Bread of Life". In Jn. 6:32-35 Jesus said "Moses gave you not that True Bread that comes down from Heaven. I Am the True Bread."

The 2nd promise to the "Overcomers" given here is that they will be given "a white stone". This is indicitive of being found innocent of sin, in that in ancient Roman times when a person was put on trial for a crime, if they were found to be innocent they were given, by the Judge, "a white stone". If they were found to be guilty then the Judge would give them "a black stone". This shows us that when the "overcoming believer" (like Antipas — the first Bishop of the Church of Pergamos) stands before God on the Day of Judgment they will be found "innocent" of sin, which is what is symbolized by the "white stone".

The 3rd promise to the "Overcomers" here is that they will be given "a new name", which means that when they become a born-again Christian they receive "a new nature" as II Cor. 5:17 says "If any man be in Christ he is become a new creation, old things pass away and all things become new." The "new name" indicates "a new nature" which comes by a person being "born-again", after which they should begin "walking in newness of life".

If we want to receive these "promises to the Overcomers" then we must refrain from participating in the evil influences of the World, just as the "overcomers" of Pergamos had to refrain from the worship of Emperor Trajan, the "god" Zeus", the "god" Asclepius, the "goddess" Ishtar or Isis: the "Queen of Heaven".
